Bonhoeffer's theology has been claimed by interpreters across the spectrum, but in this particular work he operates squarely within Lutheran orthodoxy with a high Christology and a strong doctrine of grace. Some later Bonhoeffer writings (e.g., Letters and Papers from Prison) raise more complex theological questions, but The Cost of Discipleship stands as a classically orthodox and pastorally serious text.
